New topic

What I said is all about my experience in my 56 years of life.  Remember there are good and Bad people everywhere.

Today we are deviating from serious topic can be healthy and less distressing We will return to the nursing topic later.  Nevertheless what is going to be said here is actually related to nursing and health as a whole particularly mental health and women (which I have not touched) in general. I can say this because I do have the experiences and I am over half century old, which qualified me to say what am I saying, it is about honesty.

Many who read this might know and some don't. During my years of services as a nurse (clinical and teaching) I have work in middle east, in the west and of course our beloved country Malaysia. Yes Malaysia my dear readers. There are many good things in Malaysia- food for example. One will never go hungry in Malaysia and of course out weather- which do not require us is to have winter cloth, summer cloth, spring and autumn cloth. We only need summer cloth and umbrella.

Western people are mostly honest and direct. They say what in their mind and one don't have to worry being put in cold storage for being honest. They love honesty and hate people who pretend which we do including our students oversea are doing.  I talked and critique them on anything from clothing, religious and their culture. They might not happy with it but accept it if we present the issues with facts. We cannot be honest even to inform them of our time for prayer instead of saying "Excuse me I have to go for my prayer" many will say "excuse me I have to go for a while" when asked back, they are will respond back by saying "oh something" Be honest for goodness sake. The honesty will you gain respect.  I once was asked why I must we head-scarf, my response is "it is part of my religious obligation. I response by asking them why are you naked and wearing minimal clothes. If you are not good they will say you are not good (remember not all people are the same).  Beside that these people do not keep what was criticized at heart, in fact they thank us, because we see them what is right. I know because I have gone through that, not only they appreciate us but they too will ensure action are taken or rectified immediately.

Never do the same in Malaysia, even for a good reason, unless you are sure (I means really really sure that the person can accept your comment.  If someone is fat, for example, we will be so polite not to say the person is fat, the politeness is make a person continue to be unhealthy or doing things that is wrong. Of course Honesty can be done is a polite manner because by being honest we are helping someone to improve themselves becoming healthy but it has to be done in private, individual and exclusive pertaining the person.  We also cannot criticize people of higher authority, as the saying "boss is always right" even when he is SOOOOOOO wrong. Criticizing higher authority means no promotion, or any good incentive.  Being Honest in Malaysia also means that your record will be BLACK forever.

I always receive comment to say that I am not friendly, not team player because of my look because I like to isolate myself from conflicting situation and when I say thing, it come from the heart.  May be that is my weakness, I need to be me well mannered and gentle. It is hard because of my middle Eastern blood running in my vein. However I am better than most Middle Eastern poeple who are born and live in Middle East.  I am Malaysin with Middle Eastern Blood.  My advise is if you are an honest person, walk away or be silence from any situation which requires you to talk discuss issue or topic which you know going to incriminate you. This is better than lying and pretending. At the same time, mix and match when and if necessary.

For that matter, I am more comfortable around Western People because they don't judge me. I am also more at peace living there because you do not have to pretend.  Don't get me wrong I love Malaysia but Malaysia do not Love me.

Defination of Nursing

Continue from yesterday (What I am writing may not applied to everyone so, if you are among the good nurses, pad your shoulder and job well done)

The third group of people who enter nursing are those whose heart and mind are in nursing. They know why they enter what they are getting into.  This group usually excel throughout their study period and perform better in every aspect of nursing from theory to clinical skill

Today topic is about others' view (medical paternity and public) on nursing and nurses in Malaysia
The views change from one decade to another.  In my early days of nursing, doctors regard nurse as their subordinate rather than co-worker or team member, this remain until today.  Yet despite their perception they do have respect for nurse, particularly senior nurse which we called Matron and Sister.  Sister and Matron are like Big Boss in the ward. Patient fear, nurses respect, doctors listen because they know their works. The respect comes because sister and matron are very senior group of people with experiences.  Their roles are to make sure patient happy and well. Yet inside the heart doctors still look at nurses' role as subordinate especially the registered nurses.  Nurses are expect to do rather than say (seen not heard).

Public on the other hands still look at nurses as someone who are of low class workers and the job that only the low academic will enter. These remain today. What changes today, the respect for Matron and Sister has gone down. Why? because many of these positions are held by a younger generation especially sisters.  They are less vocal and not able to verbalized the need of the patients and nursing's needs.

Who to be blamed? We are,the nurses themselves.  Nurses seem to enjoy pleasing or making doctors happy rather than making the patient happy happy. They run when the doctors asked them to do anything and fear if their disobeyed doctors in providing care including nursing care, even they know they are doing the right things. Their attitudes make the doctors and public see nurses as servant of the doctors. But they take their time when with each other.

tomorrow: Nursing training has becoming a commodity and business venture rather profession (next entry).
Today, is exactly a month I am without work.  I missed the busy life of working. I missed my nursing role, both in clinical practice and my teaching.  I missed my students, who I have seen grown, developed, tumbled and failed.  Something that we as an educator has to accept.

My students who many of them entering nursing not because they are interested in it, failed to embrace the nursing.  They are embarrassed to be associated with nursing, some leave nursing immediately after graduating. They do something that need additional training and skill rather than doing nursing, a noble job.  The other group of students, remains in nursing but refused to be in clinical setting and going into teaching.  To me this is the most dangerous group of nurses because through them (without knowledge and skill) are teaching a new breed of young men and women to become nurses. In Islam to become an educator you need to have following

‘ilm - knowing
l
lMa’arifat - knowledge preceded by actively seek knowledge,
l
lHikmat - higher level of knowledge above ilm’ that interprets and uses factual information within moral context, knowledge of understanding
l
lBasiirat - guided use of the sense that their perception are correct,
l
lRa’ay opinion based on rational consideration, right or wrong
l
lTadhkirah - remembrance or reminder to maintain knowledge
l
lLubb - intelligance / understanding
l
lShu’ur - Information / data
l
lBurhan / sultan - proof of evidence (OHK)
l
l

Some students, had no interest in nursing but developed the interest along the way during the years they are in school.  They are now working.  I have students who regretted coming into nursing and blamed everyone that made her ended up nursing. Today this individual is embraced nursing and working to gain experiences as much as possible in clinical setting

Becoming a nurse

do you have what it takes to become a nurse.  To many nursing is like any job which do not require high level of educational preparation and the interest. And as Muslim, entering nursing must have the good intention and good niat.

I can see the declination in Malaysia today.  The main reason for the decline, is poor academic entrance, focus on quantity rather than quality (in some institution) and educators.

When I joined nursing, I saw my tutors are those who teach using their knowledge and skill because they were a practiced nurse long before they becoming educators.  I have to have goo grade and pass in Sciences subject, math, english as well.  Despite that I still have difficulty in calculating medication, which I eventually learned because I have tutors who can teach

Today many (not all) are fresh graduate with degree who believe their undergraduate degree grant them the license to teach and they are not suppose to be in clinical setting practising nursing.

During my days when I did nursing in America I have a workmate who hold a PhD in psychology decided to become a nurse to work in the ward. Most nurse managers and nurse educators (of various specialties) were having Master degree

To become a developed country, nurses and nursing need to be of high qualities in both educations and clinical experiences who know what they are doing.

We must not let people pointing fingers when the fingers should be pointing at us when complaints are made against nurses

nursing and women's health

Nursing today. Malaysian scenario.  How nurses, public and medical paternity view nursing in Malaysia today.
Comparing to Nursing worldwide, are we at par with them?Though Nursing started in the Muslim world and appreciated by the highest and Honored People in Islam- the prophet, why today nursing are slipped away from Muslim world.
How can we bring back the glory of it
Is being a female makes us less appreciated.
